Serum Enzyme Tests for Liver Function

SGOT and SGPT, or Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase and Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase, are vital medical tests gauging liver functionality. They are alternatively referred to as AST (Aspartate Transaminase) and ALT (Alanine Transaminase). SGOT is present in the heart, skeletal muscles, and kidneys, while SGPT is exclusively in the liver.

Significance in Diagnosis

The liver, essential for metabolism, detoxifies blood by processing waste products through enzyme production. SGOT and SGPT, common liver enzymes, escalate when the liver is damaged or inflamed. Elevated levels indicate potential liver diseases like hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer, helping monitor treatment effectiveness.

Elevated Levels: Causes and Range

Normal SGPT and SGOT levels should range between 7-56 and 8-45 units/liter, respectively. Beyond these, especially exceeding 56 units/liter for SGPT and 50 units/liter (men) or 45 units/liter (women) for SGOT, signals underlying chronic conditions. Causes include hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and various clinical conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, and pancreatitis.

Symptoms and Implications

While elevated levels might be asymptomatic, some experience fatigue, nausea, abdominal discomfort, and quick bruising. Severe cases may show jaundice, breathlessness, leg, and abdominal swelling, dark urine, and pale stools. Medical attention is crucial upon experiencing symptoms, and further testing may be required.

Blood Test Procedure

The SGPT and SGOT blood test involves painlessly drawing blood from a vein for laboratory analysis. Results, expressed as the AST/ALT ratio, with a normal range of 0.8-1.2, indicate liver health. Ratios higher than 1.2 suggest liver damage, while lower ratios may point to heart, kidney, or infection issues. Additional tests might be ordered based on SGOT and SGPT results for precise diagnoses.
